Robin became involved in yoga research in 2000, teaming up with Group Health Research Institute for the landmark National Institutes of Health-funded study, Comparing Yoga, Exercise, and a Self-Care Book for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized, Controlled Trial, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in Dec., 2005. The overwhelmingly positive results of this study supported further research, and Robin trained and mentored teachers for a second, larger scale trial utilizing the same protocol she had co-created in 2000.
Thirty-one million Americans suffer from low back pain, and increasingly, people with mild to moderate back pain seek out yoga classes to find relief for the condition. In this environment, it’s critical for yoga teachers to understand how to assess and address these conditions with intelligence, and above all, how to keep students safe.
It is critical for yoga teachers to understand how to assess and address S.I. pain. Robin focuses on the key differences between lumbar and sacral issues; the importance of core engagement and stabilization practices; safe sequencing and the challenge of breaking our addiction to the practices that we love that are actually ‘himsa’ — harming to the body.
In this 5-day intensive, yoga teachers and therapists will develop the means to intelligently address the primary low back dysfunctions, hypo- and hypermobility, S.I. destabilization, pelvic misalignment, scoliosis, and lumbar-disc conditions
