The Advanced Studies Program

The Advanced Studies Program is intended as an educative and practical study for any student or teacher of yoga who would like to develop a deeper understanding of the philosophy and practice of yoga beyond the basic asana class. The program is designed to direct each individual toward developing his or her own practice, facilitating growth on all levels: physical, mental and spiritual. Teachings will be based on Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, and embodied through asana, pranayama, meditation, chanting, and personal inquiry. Teachers and students of all traditions will find this program an engaging, challenging transformative process.

This program is a pre-requisite for The Yoga Barn Teacher Training (the Teacher Training will not be offered in 2010). This series are also for teachers and students who want to intensify their practice and develop a deeper understanding of yoga and themselves. This program will count towards Yoga Alliance certification hours for those working towards their 500 hour certificate. Contact Robin directly at: 425-222-6350 with questions, or ask at The Yoga Barn .

The dates for 2010:

March 19-21: Kriya Yoga - Sutra 2-1; tapas, svadhyaya and isvarapranidhana – How do we actually take action to transform our lives?

April 23-25: Astanga Yoga – How does Patanjali define each of the 8-limbs and how does study and practice of them bring us new awareness and understanding of ourselves?

May 14-16: Pancha Maya – The 5 Levels of Being; Each of the five has five; like a labyrinth we circle towards our own Spiritual center

June 18-20: Chakras – The Human Energy system – How do we unblock the flow of prana so we feel alive and balanced within our bodies, minds and hearts?

July 17-25: 9-Day Intensive – TAPAS - Looking deep and honestly into the well of the kleshas, the ways in which we constrict and create dukha or suffering, for ourselves. These culminating 9-days are a detoxification process which help us purify through strong asana, contemplative practice, journaling, sutra study and mantra japa (chanting).

Times for all weekend practices:

Friday: 10-5; Saturday: 10-5 & Sunday: 10-5

The Yoga Barn 500 hour Yoga Alliance Registered Teacher Training

The Yoga Barn teacher training is an in-depth training in the viniyoga tradition with core alignment principles from Iyengar yoga woven in as is appropriate. This training is registered with the Yoga Alliance at the 500 hour level and is considered by AVI to be a fundamental training for AVI's Yoga Therapist Training. Robin Rothenberg, Certified Yoga Therapist and primary instructor for this training is herself an AVI graduate (1999, Therapist Training, 2002), and a Certified Iyengar Teacher (1992). The Yoga Barn Advanced Studies Program or comparable program is a pre-requisite to The Yoga Barn Teacher Training.

This training is designed not only to prepare one to teach all levels of asana, but to delve deeply into the practices of pranayama, chanting, meditation, personal ritual and to cultivate a deep appreciation for the philosophical basis for yoga, Patanjali's, Yoga Sutras. All student-teachers are required to develop a personal practice incorporating the various tools of yoga. Robin will meet with you privately to help cultivate your personal practice and to support you in the training process. Mentors from the Yoga Barn staff may also be assigned to assist those in need of additional support. This is an intensive and intimate training, limited to 15, so that in traditional viniyoga style, each student-teacher is encouraged to develop in the way most appropriate to him/her.

The Anatomy and Physiology portions will be taught by Dr. Jill Massengill, D.C., and Dr. Lynn Hughes, D.O., psychiatrist. In addition to their vast experience in the medical field, both of these women are seasoned teachers in the viniyoga lineage.

Currently, there is no Teacher Training scheduled for 2010-11. Applicants interested in future trainings can apply through Essential Yoga Therapy, info@essentialyogatherapy.com .

The Advanced Studies was a safe environment for me to work deeply on the journey to finding my true self. The tools I have learned have improved my relationships with everyone in my life. The Advanced Studies Program is a must for anyone interested in learning the balance of caring for yourself first – then creating the opening to relate to others through your heart.
    - Debby, Mother, Yoga Teacher & Horsewoman

I was impressed by the sheer volume of what I learned about the subject matter. The balance was just right between practice, explanation, question periods, heart focus and head focus. Robin, is a great teacher - a potent combination of extensive knowledge, years of experience, exceptional teaching skills, and a palpable love of yoga. I appreciated her clarity, pacing, patience, focus, compassion, and humor.    - Laura

Thanks for a very comprehensive workshop in Viniyoga for chronic low back pain. The syllabus was well organized, so by the end of the intensive I felt we had been given a good foundation, on all levels, for developing our own practices for students with low back pain. The small group experiential learning and case studies were the highlights of the intensive for me. I have been working on accessing my inner core in my personal practice every day since the workshop. My low back and SI pain have subsided considerably.    - Ellie

I was impressed with the way each day was built upon the previous day. I felt comfortably guided from one day to the next. The material was easy to process and I wasn't left overwhelmed. The class environment was supportive and loving. The combination of yoga philosophy, chanting, dharma talks, yoga therapy teachings in the viniyoga method, female companionship and your feminine energy as you presented yoga has left me very filled in the heart space!    - Beth
